About the Program
The Faculty of “Artes Liberales” welcomes candidates to the International PhD Program “Nature – Culture” generously supported by the European Union Knowledge Education Development (PO WER) funding mechanism. The Faculty of “Artes Liberales” is a leading research and training unit located at the University of Warsaw. In 2017 the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” was awarded the highest (“A+”) ranking by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland.
“Nature – Culture” is a 5-year-long interdisciplinary PhD Program combining the Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Exact Sciences. The range of the Program covers multiple research perspectives on the mutual relations between natural and cultural phenomena.
This Program is addressed to MA and MS graduates who are interested in exploring questions that combine the input of any of the following disciplines: philosophy, philology, literary studies, history, cultural studies, animal studies, ethnography and anthropology, art history, film studies, theater studies, art, architecture, sociology, psychology, linguistics, gender studies, theology, as well as biology, physics, mathematics, astronomy, computer science, ecology, geology, chemistry.
All PhDs resulting from this Program will be granted in the Humanities or Social Sciences. However, training in Natural Sciences or Exact Sciences will be provided according to individual needs of a given research topic and the previous preparation of the PhD candidate in that respect.
PhD students’ individual research is conducted in one of the well-integrated teams of professors, post-doctoral fellows and PhD students. “Nature – Culture” fosters team cooperation, while ensuring individual guidance and dissertation advising for each and every PhD student. The combination of team and individual approach to our students will be achieved, among other ways, by encouraging the students to prepare their dissertations under the supervision of two eminent scholars coming from different areas of specialization, such as the Humanities and Natural Sciences, or, for instance, different disciplines in the Humanities.
“Nature – Culture” offers 50 months of paid fellowships, plus health insurance. The individual monthly stipend for each student is 3,300 PLN (approx. 760 euros) after tax in the first year of study. 1,800 PLN of this sum will come from the PO WER program. The additional 1,500 PLN will come from a fellowship granted either by the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” or/and by the “Artes Liberales Institute” Foundation. From the second year on, each PhD student will keep receiving the stipend, but its amount will depend on the quality of progress made by the PhD student in his or her doctoral study and research. The Program starts on November 1, 2018. The PhD dissertations must be defended no later than June 20, 2023.
Each of the PhD students taking part in the Program will receive an additional stipend for a one-month-long research stay at one of the partner institutions of the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” outside of Poland.
The international PhD Program “Nature – Culture” is based on the strong belief that the future of scholarly and scientific inquiry will bridge the still persistent disciplinary divides, and we intend to help our future doctoral graduates to take advantage of this exciting development in their professional and academic careers.
